Use Your Manners

As the MTA ramps up its etiquette campaign on subways and buses, here are a few suggestions for things New Yorkers can do, not only to make the commute more pleasant, but to enhance life in our city as well.

  1. Smile.
  2. Greet the doorman.
  3. Hold the door.
  4. Remove your backpack on the subway.
  5. Keep right -- on the road, on the sidewalk, and on the staircase.
  6. Wipe down the treadmill when you're finished.
  7. Hold the elevator.
  8. Offer your seat.
  9. Wait your turn.
  10. Ask politely.
  11. Text or walk -- but not both at once, please.
  12. Say thank you.
  13. Keep your voice down.
  14. Write thank you notes.
  15. Return phone calls.
  16. Watch your language.
  17. Return what you borrow.
  18. Have your MetroCard ready.
  19. Pay attention.
  20. Listen carefully.
  21. Follow instructions.
  22. Be gentle.
  23. Follow the rules.
  24. Pick up your trash.
  25. Be a mensch.
